Returning the Human Connection to Social care: Leveraging Digital. By Dr. Michelle Tempest
The community care sector serves as a cornerstone in supporting the most vulnerable members of society, including the elderly, disabled individuals, and those with chronic illnesses. Yet the under-loved social care sector has recently been dealt a significant blow as Rachael Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced National Insurance hikes. The result is that investors and operators are facing the perfect storm of long-term fiscal tightening, staff shortages, high care costs due to co-morbidities and an increase in demand as the UK population ages.
Workforce
There are an estimated 165,000 vacancies across adult social care. Care roles demand a unique blend of medical, communication, and emotional skills. Recruitment and retention are challenging when competing against other industries offering comparable pay but fewer responsibilities.
Survey after survey has highlighted that care staff enjoy the human connection of their work. More recent staff surveys have shown the desire for more training to allow staff to be more informed about the increasingly complex care needs of those they look after. I believe as we move forwards into 2025, the next frontier will focus on how to help save time for staff and gift back the most cherished part of the job – caring for people, holding hands, being a shoulder to cry on and offering social and emotional nourishment.
Technology
It’s exciting to have seen the advancements in digitalising both back office and front facing new technologies across the community care sector. The reduction in pen and paper is palpable. Digital support across administration systems, billing systems, referral management, scheduling staff rotas, medication management, activity planning, quality assurance, incident reporting falls prevention, monitoring of vital signs, the list goes on.
The plethora of available technologies are already a transformative force to support caregivers, and enhance care quality. Examples include:
- Reduced falls and reduced admission to hospital thanks to fall detector technologies such as Sensio.
- Improved patient administration systems and data thanks to OneTouch and Nourish
- Enhanced incident reporting and feedback thanks to Radar
- AI-powered information providing real-time guidance and education to caregivers thanks to CareBrain.
As operators install end-to-end platforms the evidence is in improved care outcomes and hopefully improved staff happiness. Gone are the days of time wasting by a thousand clicks on the computer or i-phone as staff log in and out of systems. The future is about using interoperable digital solutions to reduce the administrative burden. New kid on the block CareBrain really focuses on offering staff what they have been asking for – a simple way to learn and a voice activated system to answer questions in real time. Overall, such solutions are putting care staff back in harmony with those they care for and management can ensure that the AI solution is tailored to their unique rules and regulations.
A Vision for the Future
For the community care industry to thrive, embracing innovation and collaboration will be crucial. Policymakers, providers, and tech innovators must work together to address workforce challenges, enhance workplace well-being, and invest in transformative technologies.
2025 marks a pivotal moment—not just to reflect on the challenges of community care but to seize the opportunity to shape a brighter future.
